A Hidden Gift

Hino Kahoko was never a girl keen on cooking. Making cakes or something similar is definitely not her strength. However, today, she prepared bars of chocolate for her loved one.

Len Tsukimori was never a guy who knew romance. His façade is so calm and cold like ice that everyone knows it. However, he placed red roses in his violin box cautiously today, and then took his treasured violin out of the box. Although today he won’t be able to practice violin at school, he thinks it’ll be worth it for the sake of that girl.

'Len, let's go to the roof for lunch. Kahoko. '
Kahoko carefully typed those words and pressed the send button. Relieved, she let out a breathy sigh.
“I hope that Len will like my chocolate. Oh wait, it seems like he doesn't care much for sweets. Didn’t he offer all of those yummy looking confectionaries to Hihara-senpai when we went to visit him? What a pity…”

'Len, let's go to the roof for lunch. Kahoko.'
Seeing the message, Len tried hiding a secret smile with no success; it was quite noticeable to the others.
“I must give the roses out at lunch, Kaho will love them,” he thought.

What is the special occasion, one may ask, that would motivate Kahoko to make chocolates and Len to buy roses? Of course, it is Valentine’s Day.

As if replying to the couple's expectations, lunch came at last. After the bell rang, Kahoko dashed out from the classroom towards the music building section, not noticing that the teacher still had something to say.

“Yu, Yunoki?” Halfway to the roof, Kahoko bumped into Yunoki. She was shocked seeing the countless chocolate and roses meaning "passionate love", "I only love you", "permanent love", etc. held in the hands of the sadist Yunoki.

However, Kahoko didn’t read between the lines. Although it wasn't enjoyable holding such a plethora of “lovers’ gifts” intended for Hino, Yunoki pretended that he met her just by a coincidential "accident".

“Are you feeling disconcerted seeing me?” asked Yunoki.

“Of course NOT!” Kahoko disclaimed immediately, “I have something extremely important to do. Goodbye, Yunoki-senpai.” She sidestepped Yunoki and resumed walking down the hallway.
Just as Kahoko was leaving, Yunoki said, “Can't wait to see Tsukimori, eh?” with a gentle smile adorning his perfect face.

She suddenly froze, and Kahoko couldn’t help but blush a brilliant red resembling her hair color. “What I need to do is really none of your business, don't you agree?” she retorted.

Kahoko regretted her words instantly.

“I’m afraid your business is my business, dear Kahoko. Wouldn’t you be obligated to help a senpai carrying a heavy load? ” Yunoki’s smile slowly turned into a smirk.

“Mou! Are you just holding those flowers and chocolates to get me into a fix?” Kahoko wanted to say. Instead, she swallowed those words and gritted her teeth. “Oh of course, Yunoki-senpai,” she emphasized, “I wouldn’t dare not help you.” Kahoko gave a warm smile to her fellow schoolmate.
“Ugh!” thought Kahoko. “Len will have to wait longer. Haven’t I already said that I have something important to do? I’ll need to be quick!”
-------

“I hate Yunoki!” Kahoko's eyes were on fire. “Taking care of those stupid chocolates and roses took me more than 20 minutes! And then, just to make it so much better, I had to bear those girls’ jealous glares!” She ran quickly up the stairs to the roof murmuring wicked thoughts about Yunoki. “I must hurry; I can’t make Len wait a moment longer!”
------

Tsukimori is being quite peculiar today.

Usually, he is a well-mannered gentleman. Whenever a teacher gives mistaken or pointless remarks, he would show respect to the teacher by ignoring the pitiful mistakes and listening only to the good points of the lecture. Today, however, Tsukimori immediately cut off the tutor from talking right after the bell had rung. Ignoring the broken-hearted teacher, Tsukimori rushed for the roof.
-----

“......” Silence resonated throughout the rooftop.

Currently, there are three people lounging on the roof. Besides Tsukimori, there are two others, from his point of view, who should not be there.

“……” More silence.

“Oi, Tsukimori, you look cross. Haven't you said that we could come to the roof?” Tsuchiura grumbled.
“You don't look good when you are angry,” Hihara added.
Tsukimori’s wonderfully good-looking face that can even anger boys with envy is suddenly marred by a scowl.
-----
Flashback

Tsukimori was climbing the stairs towards the roof, looking forward to his private time with his sweetheart Kahoko. Appearing out of nowhere, Hihara called, “Tsukimori, are you going to the roof for practicing? Let's practice together!” Shocked, Tsukimori stuttered. (Please note that he had taken the violin out of the box and put roses inside instead.) Just as Tsukimori was trying to refuse, Tsuchiura showed up.

“Oi, Hihara-senapi, Tsukimori. Are you guys going up?”

“Yep! Are you joining us too?” Hihara replied. Unfortunately, he failed to see Tsukimori’s rumored death glare eyes pinning him down.
-------
Back on the rooftop

“Um... I...” No sooner than Tsukimori had started his sentence, Tsuchiura spoke up, “Seems that Mr. Elite Music Student-sama doesn't welcome us here. Hihara, let's go to the practicing rooms instead.”
“I have no objections,” stated Tsukimori.
Both Hihara and Tsuchiura then left.
-----

“What goes round really does come round,” Kahoko thought.  Karma had rewarded her evil thoughts about Yunoki. Just when she was about to reach the foot of the stairs, the “Innocent First Year Duo” Shimizu and Fuyuumi came to greet their beloved senpai.
“Where are you racing off to, Kaho-senpai?” Fuyuumi, in the eyes of the public, is widely regarded to be an adorable bishoujo. However, in the eyes of the impatient Kahoko, Fuyuumi seemed like a devil.
“Are you going to the roof, Kaho-senpai? May we join you?”  Shimizu, who’s supposed to be always sleepy, is miraculously wide awake today. Although Kahoko ordinarily would have been delighted with his wakefulness, she just let out a long-suffering sigh.
“Gomen, Len!” thought Kahoko, “There’s just too much going on today!”
Unexpectedly, Len’s thoughts mirrored her own, “Gomen, Kahoko. There just seems to be too much going on today.”
-----
The door knob turned, and Len snapped up, fully alert.

Instead of his late girlfriend, in stepped Kaji Aoi, the recent transferee.
“Oh, you’re the only one here?” he said. Kaji’s thoughts, however, were filled with relief at the absence of a certain Yunoki Azuma.
Ruminating about his cold relationship with Yunoki, Kaji failed to notice the door swinging open behind him. The roof echoed with the sound of Kaji’s head’s impact with the door.
“So sorry, Kaji. I didn't notice you behind the door at all.” Ironically, the person who opened the door was Yunoki. The meaning of his words were that Kaji was unimportant to him, and that Kaji had no right to stay in range of Yunoki's sight.

The air between the two adversaries was strange; it seemed as if the tension could have been cut with a butter knife. At the same time, the atmosphere surrounding Tsukimori was horrifying too; it was like he was infused with the fickle rage of a volcano.
The door knob turned again, and all three heads spontaneously turned towards the door. It was Kahoko, accompanied by her two kouhai, Hihara, and Tsuchiura, who discarded his idea of practicing in the practice rooms in favor of accompanying his crush to her destination.
Kahoko didn't want to know the reason why the handsome bishounen of Seiso were all here on the roof. She only had her eyes on Len, her darling, sweet boyfriend.

Watched by the others, the couple couldn’t show any overly intimate actions. Kahoko shook her head, feeling helpless. Suddenly, Kahoko came up with an idea, “Why don't I give everyone the chocolate I made? They will surely look downwards to examine the sweets...”

“Hey everyone, I've made some "friendly" chocolates, would you mind accepting these?”

A cold wind blew across the rooftop.

The word "friendly" stabbed deeply into the heart of her admirers.

Kahoko didn't know why no one was replying to her question. Sadly, she whispered, “Nobody would like the chocolates I made you…?”

Hihara couldn't bear the sight of Kahoko’s innocent bullion eyes brimming with tears. He was the first to accept the chocolate. Although it tasted slightly bitter, and although he had wanted love chocolates rather than friendship chocolates, a smile brightened his face. “It tastes great! Thanks, Kaho-chan.”
The other boys came back to life after seeing Hihara’s reaction, eating their own pieces of chocolate without a single word.

While the others were lowering their heads to eat the chocolates, Kahoko lifted her head and gave her Valentine’s chocolate, hidden in her mouth, to Len by a passionate kiss.

Despite the fact that there were too much people watching, and although Kahoko could only give her Valentine's present secretly and silently, the distance between the hearts of the couple were never so loving and close.

Pretending not to see what was happening, the others thought, “Godspeed, Tsukimori, Kahoko.”
